San Jose Book Shop and Pet Pals AAT present a new free reading assistance program for children experiencing difficulty reading! Gaining confidence in reading has never been more enjoyable - or cuddly.  Children feel more comforable reading to a dog.  Kids know that if they make a mistake, stumble over a word, or don't know the meaning of a word, the dog will neither laugh nor ciritcize.  Therapy dogs listen to children completely unconditionally, leaving children to enjoy the experience of reading without fear.  Therapy dogs can help children learn to read, and love to read.  When children are relaxed, they are more willing to attempt more difficult reading levels, talk about the books they read, and absorb content more easily.   All of the dogs in our program are the pets of the volunteer handlers.  Petpals carefully screens each dog for temperament and health.
